Why it shows up in Portland-area lawns, and what actually keeps it from coming back.
If moss keeps creeping back into your lawn no matter what you try, you’re not doing anything wrong — you’re gardening in a climate that moss is very well suited to. Mild, wet winters and long stretches of shade give it exactly the conditions it needs, and grass struggles to compete once it gets a foothold.
Killing the moss you can see is the easy part. Keeping it from coming back is the part most lawns get wrong.
Why It Shows Up
What Actually Helps
One Treatment Rarely Finishes The Job
Moss control products will kill what’s there, but the conditions that let it move in — shade, drainage, soil chemistry — don’t change on their own. That’s why moss tends to come back in the same spots year after year unless something about the underlying environment changes too.
According to Oregon State University’s Extension Service, moss control in Western Oregon lawns generally works best as an ongoing approach — addressing drainage, shade, and soil condition alongside any direct treatment — rather than relying on a single application by itself.
