Weeds,Handled.

Clover, dandelions, and the other regulars — what’s worth treating and what isn’t.

Not every weed in the lawn is actually a problem. Some are a sign the grass underneath is thin or stressed, some show up no matter how well the lawn is cared for, and one or two are really more of a preference than a lawn health issue. Knowing which is which keeps you from treating things that don’t need it.

The Regulars

01CloverSpreads fastest in thin or under-fertilized lawns; some homeowners leave it on purpose
02DandelionsDeep taproots and wind-blown seed make them one of the most persistent lawn weeds
03CrabgrassShows up in thin, sunny patches through summer and spreads before you notice it
04MossA different problem with a different cause than clover or dandelions

What Actually Works

01A Thick, Healthy Lawn Crowds Them OutThe single best long-term weed prevention is grass dense enough that weeds don’t have room to establish
02Timing MattersPre-emergent treatments need to go down before weeds germinate, not after they’re visible
03Spot Treatment Vs. Full-Lawn TreatmentA few dandelions don’t need the same approach as a lawn that’s gone mostly to weeds

Is It Worth Treating?

Clover isn’t doing your lawn any real harm — it actually fixes nitrogen in the soil, and plenty of homeowners are fine leaving it alone. Dandelions are more of a judgment call: a few scattered through the yard are mostly cosmetic, but a lawn that’s gone heavily to dandelions usually points to thin, stressed grass underneath that’s worth addressing directly.

If moss is part of what you’re dealing with too, that’s a separate issue with a different cause — see our guide to moss control for what actually helps there.
